Lng time charter rates
The rate for vessels shipping LNG from the Atlantic Basin to Asia has jumped to $90,000 to $95,000 a day this week from $75,000 a day at the end of August, brokers and traders said. LNG vessel charter rates have suffered another down leg in 2015, with spot charter rates falling to USD 25,000 per day. Rates have halved in the last six months, falling back to levels seen in the depths of the global financial crisis. Spot charter rates are generally higher and certainly more volatile than longer term time charter rates. Strong Asian demand across this winter has seen spot charter rates rise to between $70-80k per day for 160,000 mcm vessels. Short-term LNG charter rates rose dramatically in the early 2010s, apparently in response to Asian LNG demand and, subsequently, the Fukushima disaster which created a tight LNG spot market. From early 2013, LNG carrier short-term charter rates fell dramatically from $155,000/day in 2012 to $24,500/day in 2015, as shown in Figure 1. Keeping pace with the changing nature of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, the traditional long-term LNG time charter market is evolving and charter periods are becoming shorter. The rate for vessels shipping LNG from the Atlantic Basin to Asia has jumped to $90,000 to $95,000 a day this week from $75,000 a day at the end of August, brokers and traders said.
Even at a time when charter rates are quite strong, there are at least 24 laid-up steam turbine vessels, which is about 11% of the total steam turbine fleet. About 92% of these vessels are younger than the average demolition age of LNG carriers over the last five years.

So the fact that charter rates have more than halved since 2012 has significantly reduced the cost of moving LNG. Chart 3 shows the impact of the recent fall in charter rates in reducing shipping costs for cargo diversions from Spain (Huelva) to Japan (Sakai).
